Geothermal resources in the country have potential to produce up to 2000 mw of clean and realiable electricity

Nicaragua continues to promote actions to promote clean and safe energy at competitive prices.
ENERGIA LIMPIA XXI. A report by the Inter-American Development Bank on the various projects it finances in Latin America highlights relevant data on the progress of geothermal studies in Nicaragua. According to the report carried by Energía Limpia XXI, it appears that on August 21, the Ministry of Energy Mines opened the process to receive expressions of interest from consulting firms interested in carrying out the necessary Geoscientific Studies to complement the Pre-feasibility to determine the existence or not of a geothermal reservoir in the Cosigüina volcano in the department of Chinandega. The closing date for applicants is September 8 of the current year.
The Government of Nicaragua, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), has received financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION AND TRANSMISSION IMPROVEMENTS PROGRAM IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE INVESTMENT PLAN OF NICARAGUA and it is proposed to use a of funds for consulting service contracts.
Data from Energía Limpia XXI indicate that Nicaragua’s geothermal potential is one of the richest in Central America and is estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 MW of power, a resource that could meet national demand and even facilitate energy exports to other countries in the world. the region through the SIEPAC electricity grid.
The consulting services (“the services”) include carrying out the necessary Geoscientific Studies to complement the Pre-feasibility of the area of geothermal interest, to determine the existence or not of a geothermal reservoir in the volcano.
