India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first works of the world’s largest solar energy park a hybrid infraestructure with 30-gigawatt (GW) capacity at Vighakot village in the district of Kutch in Gujarat. “Energy security & water security are vital in the 21st century. Who can forget the water problems of Kutch. When our team spoke of getting Narmada waters to Kutch, we were mocked. Now, Narmada waters have reached Kutch & by the blessings of Maa Narmada, Kutch is progressing”.
The park will have the capacity to generate about 30,000 MW of electricity from both the solar as well as wind energy. The Prime Minister noted that “This Renewable Energy Park will have an investment of about 1.5 lakh crore rupees. Imagine the utilization of such a huge tract of desert. The border security will also improve with windmills along the border. It will also help the country in meeting the target of reducing the electricity bill of the common man. This project will greatly benefit both farmers and industries. And, above all, it will reduce pollution and benefit our environment also”.
The Prime Minister also noted that “electricity that will be generated from this renewable energy park will help prevent emission of 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and from the point of environment it will be equivalent to planting about 9 crore trees. This energy park will also make a huge contribution in reducing per capita carbon dioxide emission in India”. A report carried by Energía Limpia XXI magazine states that India has reduced its emission by 21% during the last 15 years. The nation’s solar capacity has grown from 2.63 GW in 2014 to 36 in 2020 and Presently India has the fourth largest renewable energy capacity in the world.
The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has recently said “Since 2015, the number of people working in renewable energy in India has increased five-fold. Last year, the country’s spending on solar energy surpassed spending on coal-fired power generation for the first time. India has also made significant progress towards universal access to electricity”. The country is projecing to reach 175 GigaWatts before 2022 and 450 GigaWatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
